Baird says in a statement that rocket attacks aimed Tuesday at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem “prove that Hamas continues to target innocent civilians.”
Baird says that Canada believes Israel has every right to defend itself “from such belligerent acts of terrorism.”
The statement came as Israel launched its largest offensive in the Gaza Strip in nearly two years, carrying out an aerial assault on scores of targets and killing 25 people.
Officials called it an open-ended operation aimed at ending weeks of heavy rocket fire.
Baird called on the new Palestinian government to exercise its authority in Gaza and bring an immediate end to Hamas’s rocket attacks on Israel.
Baird adds that Hamas must respect the ceasefire agreed upon in 2012.
