A man dressed as Spider-Man was arrested in New York’s Times Square this weekend after punching a police officer in the face.
The ornery superhero, real name Junior Bishop, faces charges including felony assault as a result of Saturday’s incident, which was caught on camera and uploaded to YouTube.
According to the New York Post, a police officer overheard Spidey demanding $10 from tourists who wanted to take photos with him, which apparently struck him as an unreasonable price. The officer confronted the masked hero and asked for identification.
“F**k you! This is none of your business,” he allegedly said. The attempt to arrest Bishop resulted in the altercation seen on the video above.
It’s the latest in a series of incidents involving child-friendly characters misbehaving in public. Last year Cookie Monster was accused of shoving a 2-year-old, Super Mario was charged with groping a woman, and Elmo used anti-Semitic slurs against tourists.
As the New York Times notes, these characters can take donations but may not demand money from people, although refusing to cough up cash “often results in a distinctly New York sort of confrontation.”
In the video of the pugilistic Spider-Man, Bishop lashes out at police when they try to arrest him. He struggles and punches an officer in the head. Mickey, Minnie and Elmo look on in horror.
“Stop resisting, bitch!” the officer later tells Bishop as cops swarm around the scene.
The altercation comes less than two weeks after a New York police officer placed an asthmatic Staten Island man, Eric Garner, in a chokehold as he screamed about being unable to breathe. He died shortly thereafter.
