The ice bucket challenge that has people dousing themselves with freezing cold water and posting the results online is supposed to be a bit of fun to raise money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. But a widely shared clip shows that without proper precautions, it can go very wrong.
A Vine video posted by Boston resident John Feitelberg, which has now been viewed almost two million times, shows two young boys trying to dump a trash can worth of water onto their intended target from a raised porch, but the kids lose their grip and send the heavy bucket crashing down onto the head of the poor soul who agreed to the stunt.
Good thing he had a helmet, although he still looks like he may have lost consciousness as a result of the botched stunt.
The ALS ice bucket challenge has become a viral phenomenon over the last week as more and more celebrities take on the dare. Prominent examples include Mark Zuckerberg, Conan O’Brien and Bill Gates. Those who get soaked can then challenge up to three people to do the same, donate $100 to ALS research, or both — within 24 hours.
On Saturday, even Toronto Mayor Rob Ford got in on the viral fundraiser, and his experience looked only marginally better managed than the Vine video up top. His brother Doug Ford and former Toronto Maple Leafs player Tie Domi dumped a bucket of icy water onto the mayor, but for some reason elected to do so face-first, and then to leave the bucket on the chief magistrate’s head.
Ford subsequently challenged comedian Jimmy Kimmel, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to follow suit. They have so far not taken the bait.
