A first-year University of Waterloo student is dead after being struck by lightning this morning.

The student was walking down a path from a residence to the main campus at around 9 a.m. Friday. The walkway cuts through an open field flanked by trees.

The victim was a female engineering student from Markham, Waterloo Regional police report.

“It is with deep sadness that the University of Waterloo must confirm that a first year student was struck and killed by lightning while walking on campus this morning,” the school confirmed in a statement this morning.

Waterloo Region was hit by a sudden and vicious storm this morning. Some local utilities also reported power outages.

“The student died of their injuries in hospital,” the statement continues. “Waterloo Regional Police are in the process of notifying the family. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the student at this most difficult of times.”

After the incident, the school asked students — many of whom were engaged in Orientation Week (formerly known as Frosh Week) activities — to stay inside.

The university has asked the media to respect students and the family’s privacy at this. The victim’s name will be released once next of kin have been notified.
