John Oliver on Scottish independence: Only ‘big romantic gesture’ will keep Scots from leaving

With the referendum on Scottish independence on Thursday, HBO’s John Oliver summarized the fight on his show Sunday night by highlighting centuries of grievances Scots have against England and the ineffective response from the pro-unity “No” side.

“Scotland and England have been involved in something of a 300-year arranged marriage, and I’ll be the first to acknowledge, England has been a little bit of a dick since the honeymoon,” the comedian said on Last Week Tonight.

He noted that antipathy toward the Conservative U.K. Prime Minister was likely adding momentum to the pro-independence side, given that Cameron is a man “who forwards past the servant parts of Downton Abbey,” Oliver quipped.

He also took issue with the lacklustre appeals the No side has made for unity, from condescending TV ads to failed attempts to raise the Scottish flag in London and the prime minister’s muted response to the threat of Scotland leaving the U.K.

“There are only four days left,” Oliver said. “If I’ve learned one thing from the last four minutes of British romantic comedies, it’s that if you’re trying to win someone over you need a big romantic gesture.”

Oliver then delivered his own tongue-in-cheek address to Scotland, which included haggis, bagpipe music and a unicorn.
