Sebastien Bascoules, a math teacher in French Guiana, successfully wrangled an anaconda so large it was becoming a threat to neighbourhood pets, the New York Post reports.

In a video released Thursday of the dramatic capture, Bascoules explains that he has always liked handling reptiles and that after the five-metre-long snake ate a friend’s dog, he knew he had to act.

“It was so big I asked to my friend to help me by catching his tail – otherwise it could strangulate me,” Bascoules says.

The 39-year-old, who lives in the community of Matoury, waded into the river and managed to bring the anaconda back to land, where he wrapped a cloth around the snake’s head and moved it to deeper waters far away from populated areas.
