York Regional Police are hoping the public can help uncover the mysterious identity of a “confused” young woman they discovered nine days ago in a strip mall.
The woman can speak English, but can’t identify herself or where she’s from, police say. No other forces in the Greater Toronto Area have missing persons reports that fit her description and so now they’re hoping the public can help identify her.
Physically, she is in good health.
“She’s up walking around and coherent but she just doesn’t know who she is,” said Const. Andy Pattenden. The woman was found in a plaza in Vaughan, a commuter suburb north of Toronto, on Sept. 8 around 8 p.m. They discovered her in a strip mall near the 400 highway and Rutherford Road.
Pattenden said the officers who discovered her took her to hospital, though she seemed fine, “other than she was confused and we thought unable to care for herself, and thin and frail.”
They’ve spent over a week trying to identify her through police and medical channels to no avail. Now, they’re hoping Canadians will see and recognize her.
There’s no indication she is the victim of a crime, but Pettenden said there just isn’t enough information to know for sure. Police think she might be from somewhere else in Ontario, but anything is possible at this point. Doctors haven’t discovered a physical reason for her possible memory loss and, though perhaps a bit thin, is healthy.
The attached photo was taken recently and shows her in hospital in a gown.
She remains in hospital.
The unknown woman is 5′ 2” and 110 pounds. She has curly black hair, brown eyes and a light brown complexion. Officials believe she is between 18 and 22 years old.
