EDMONTON – Rachel Notley is the new leader of Alberta’s NDP.

The 50-year-old legislature member for Edmonton-Strathcona captured 70 per cent of the votes in party balloting.

She defeated fellow legislature member David Eggen and labour leader Rod Loyola in the race to replace Brian Mason.

Mason, a former Edmonton city councillor, led the caucus for a decade, but plans to remain on as the MLA for Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood.

The party has just four members in the 87-seat legislature, but has enjoyed a recent resurgence in the polls and in fundraising.

Mason says disillusionment with the broken promises and self-indulgent spending of the Alison Redford era has voters looking for alternatives to the Progressive Conservatives.
