Two pundits battling it out on American public television got the best ever smack-down for hyper-partisan politicking: their mom called.
Yes, their mom. She begged the pair to finally, in the spirit of Christmas, stop bringing their competing political values to the dinner table.
It seems Democrat Brad Woodhouse and Republican Dallas Woodhouse struck a chord with their southern mama when one of them said lots of families argue about politics at Thanksgiving and other holidays. That prompted a rather fed up mom to call in and take issue with the assertion.
When the caller starts speaking, brother Dallas immediately facepalms and says, “Oh God, it’s mom.” His brother’s harangued head falls into his hands soon after, and you can see his shoulders shake with laughter… or shame… or some combination thereof.
Here’s an annotated transcript of what went down after that.
“That’s right, it’s your mother.”
That’s never a good start to a mom call.
“And I disagree that all families are like ours. I don’t know many families that are fightin’ at Thanksgivin’.”
At this point Brad starts laughing openly, which often only serves to further infuriate an angry momma bear.
“Is this really your mother,” the bewildered host chimes.
“Oh, it’s our mother,” Dallas nods knowingly. You can just picture a similar scene playing out in a high school guym during a debate comeptition, decades ago.
“I was very glad that this Thanksgiving was a year that you two were supposed to go to your in-laws and I’m hoping you’ll have some of this out of your system when you come here for Christmas,” the mother of all moms adds. You know the guilt trip has gone about as far as it can go when you’re own mother says she’s glad you weren’t at Thanksgiving.
Watch the full video from the Washington Post, who dubbed the call a “hero mom” for her public display of maternal rage.
It all just goes to show, that when you’re on public access television, at least you can count on your parents to tune in.
