The best Canadian universities aren’t always the priciest for housing

Just because you’re the best doesn’t mean you have to be the most expensive, too.

A new infographic from Kijiji compares the costs of on and-off campus living at major Canadian universities and colleges, and arranges them by their spots on Maclean’s Magazine’s 2015 ranking. Surprisingly, the best schools aren’t necessarily the priciest ones.

When it comes to comprehensive schools, which have a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, the top ranked school has the second lowest on-campus fees. Simon Fraser University charges an average of $616 a month for on-campus housing, while the 15th-place school, Brock University, charges an average of $1,153 a month.

However, these averages don’t necessarily include meal plans, which can cost hundreds of dollars a term, and are often not included with residence fees. The averages were calculated with meal plans included when necessary, but some figures might be skewed lower without the expensive meal plans factored in.

As for off-campus housing, schools in towns with high rents trend pricier, regardless of the school’s quality. Off campus-housing near the University of Toronto averages out to $1,729 a month with utilities factored in, while prospective Sherbrooke University students are looking at living in a city with the lowest average rent in Canada, averaging out to $473 a month according to this chart, and $594 a month according to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

But when price isn’t the problem, Kijiji does offer one more helpful stat for students: bars. The University of Toronto has 1,428 bars within 5 km, giving it an advantage that money just can’t buy.
