‘I am resigned to the direction this is heading’: Gord Downie opens up about living with cancer and memory loss

In a CBC interview for The National this week, The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie sat down with Peter Mansbridge to discuss his new project, The Secret Path, while also opening up about living with glioblastoma, a form of terminal brain cancer.

Downie explained how he has been dealing with advanced memory loss in recent months, often forgetting the name of his children.

“My memory used to be my forte,” he said to Mansbridge. “And now I can’t remember hardly anything. I have ‘Peter’ written on my hand. I have a few things written on my hands. And I say that, just to be up front. ‘Cause I might call you Doug. … It bugs me a bit.”

“I am resigned to the direction this is heading, yes I am,” Downie, 52, added. “I really am, and because I can see it and feel it doing some … not doing some good, but it’s creating, it’s creating something.”

The complete interview is set to air Thursday.
