Two 16-year-old boys were charged in connection with a string of four bank robberies in seven months targeting a handful of financial institutions in North York.
Toronto police allege that the robberies began on Mar. 26, when one teenager acting alone entered a bank on Keele Street wearing a half-face mask, baseball cap and hoodie. The teen allegedly gave bank employees a note, demanding money and warning them that he was carrying a gun. When employees gave him the money, he fled.
Nearly one month later, on Apr. 25, the same teenager allegedly entered a bank near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West — this time with a partner. Their faces were covered with sunglasses, scarves, hats and hoods, and they followed the same routine, police said.
Months later, the teen who allegedly robbed the first bank solo continued his spree. Police said one bank on Sheppard Avenue West and one on Keele Street were held up for cash using the same modus operandi as previously.
Police arrested the two teens last week and charged one with four counts of robbery and four counts of disguise with intent. The other faces one count each of the same charges. The two cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The teens are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at 1000 Finch Avenue W. on Thursday at 10 a.m.
