William and Kate commemorate their Canada visit with an inexplicably eerie home video

To thank Canada for the “happy memories” of their visit, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released a short video notable for its unusual spookiness.

“Thank you, Canada,” declares the video at the outset, before showing about 90 seconds of slow-motion highlights from a Thursday children’s party held for the royals.

Presented without ambient sound, the video plays out against a slow, deliberate marimba-based soundtrack. The Duke of Cambridge can be seen forming a large soap bubble. Princess Charlotte pets a rabbit. And Prince George, bubble-gun in hand, stalks the party with his now famous look of toddler-y disinterest.

The actual event was held in bright, sunny fall weather, but for some reason the entire video is presented in an unsettling shade of grey.

The video depicts a children’s party held on Thursday at Government House, the Victoria home of B.C.’s lieutenant governor. Among miniature horses, clowns and balloons were members of the Canadian Armed Forces who had been invited to populate the event with other young children.

“George started to perk up after getting his hands on a water gun – and proceeded to squirt his little sister with water!” was how Hello! magazine described the most controversial turn of the engagement.

Based on the official Canada logo at video’s end, the Kensington Palace video appears to have been produced by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the federal agency that quarterbacks all royal tours.

If true, this means that Canada just funded a strange, grey-toned video thanking itself.
