TORONTO — The '60s Scoop class action returns to court in Toronto today, with the federal government asking a judge to toss the claim.
The lawsuit seeks $1.3 billion on behalf of 16,000 indigenous children in Ontario who ended up in non-aboriginal homes from 1965 to 1984.
They argue Canada's negligence led to their devastating loss of cultural identity.
The government admits that the at-risk aboriginal children placed in non-native homes might have suffered harm.
However, it says it can't now be held responsible.
It says it's wrong to look at how things were done decades ago through modern eyes.
