Daimi Akyuz was murdered just six days after his early release from prison. The 46-year-old Turkish man was at his own wedding in Izmir, Turkey when he was shot and killed, BBC reports.
Akyuz was sentenced to 58 years after killing Scottish toddler Alistair Grimason and another man in a shootout in 2003. While Turkish laws prevent criminals from spending more than 36 years behind bars, Akyuz was released 23 years ahead of schedule.
Turkish officials are investigating up to five suspects in relation to the murder of Akyuz, BBC reports.
“It’s a big story over in Turkey because the man that killed Alistair has been killed in the same manner I suppose,” Alistair’s father David told the __news outlet.
Alistair was in a cafe when he was hit by a bullet. Alistair’s Turkish mother Ozlem had moved back to Izmir, Turkey after separating from his father.
“I don’t take any joy in what has happened, I would rather that (Akyuz) was in prison and being punished for what he did,” Grimason said.
Akyuz, a former taxi driver and car salesman, was found guilty in 2004 and had only served 13 of a 36-year sentence.
“We were told at the time he would serve his full sentence. They were making an example of him,” said Grimason. “I really expected he was going to spend a long time in jail.”
“There was an opportunity they could have bumped in to each other. No-one informed us that he was being let out.”
Turkish officials have been dealing with overcrowding prisons since last year’s attempted coup over president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Turkish prisons remain in the top 10 most populous in the world and the second most populous in Europe behind Russia with capacity filled to over 102 per cent, according to the World Prison Brief.
Last year, the Turkish government announced that over 30,000 prisoners with less than two years before parole would be released if they hadn’t been convicted of terrorism, sexual crimes or murder.
