North American manufacturers used a power play that keys on horsepower. And with evolving engine technologies, many performance vehicles can up the output without treading too much on Mother Nature’s toes.
FCA led the way with two truly audacious cars — the Dodge Challenger Demon and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Both share the same monster of a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine, but the difference is found in the blower. The 2.4L unit on the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk pumps enough air to deliver 707 horsepower. The Demon ups that to 2.7L and 840 stampeding horsepower. Throw in a transmission brake for lightning fast pulls, and the Demon bolts from rest to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds!
The Lincoln Navigator arrives with a swanky new aluminum body, gadgets galore and a twin-turbo V6 that’s good for 450 horsepower; it promises to breathe life into the old dog! Finally, Buick pulled the wraps off two new Regals. In both cases, it is a case of making sure the company does not miss the shift in consumer preference by latching onto the crossover craze.
