Searching for Jimmy Kimmel online can be a risky endeavour.
According to a study by computer security company McAfee, the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live is the “most dangerous celebrity” on the internet. A search for the comedian’s name carries a 19 per cent chance of landing on a website with malware that could infect users’ computers and reveal their personal information to hackers.
“Most consumers are completely unaware of the security risks that exist when searching for celebrity and entertainment news, images and videos online, sacrificing safety for immediacy,” said Gary Davis, McAfee’s chief consumer security evangelist. “Cybercriminals capitalize on consumers’ attention to breaking celebrity news and leverage this behavior to lead them to unsafe sites that can severely infect their computers and devices and steal personal data.”
Along with Kimmel, other big names McAfee considers dangerous this year include Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren, rappers Ciara and Flo Rida, and Bruce Springsteen.
Kimmel said on his talk show Tuesday that he can’t believe a kid who played the clarinet and carried a briefcase to junior high school grew up to be the most dangerous celebrity of 2014.
This is the eighth year that McAfee has released a list of risky celebrities. The company has crowned Emma Watson, Brad Pitt and Heidi Klum as the most dangerous stars in previous years.
The top 10 “most dangerous celebrities of 2014″ and the likelihood of encountering malicious software when searching for them online, according to McAfee:
- Jimmy Kimmel 19.38%
- Armin van Buuren 19.33%
- Ciara 19.31%
- Flo Rida 18.89%
- Bruce Springsteen 18.82%
- Blake Shelton 18.47%
- Britney Spears 18.19%
- Jon Bon Jovi 17.64%
- Chelsea Handler 17.22%
- Christina Aguilera 16.67%
